Why? Because an engineering polymer such as nylon or polyester or a polypropylene copolymer would cost a few pennies more.
I and most people would happily pay that extra quarter or so and could enjoy the wallet for a very long time.
An incompetent boss specified - probably the cheapest unstabilized polypropylene homopolymer -
and the customers discovered the part had no physical properties remaining after the extra high speed elevated temperature injection molding process.
That is most likely the whole story.
Lack of technical knowledge when and where it was needed.
